How to Actually Accomplish Your New Year’s Resolution: Use This Goal Setting Action Plan

As we approach the New Year we start to reflect on the amazing, the good and not-so-great things that occurred over the past year. We start to think of some changes we’d like to make with the fresh calendar. We start thinking of our New Year’s Resolution and create a laundry list of things we’d love to change in the new year, such as:
- Get more sleep
- Learn a new language
- Workout more
- Eat healthier
- Make more social plans
- Plan more vacations
- Better quality family time
Although all the items on the list might be great things to work towards, the longer our list gets the less likely we will be to accomplish any of them. Instead of truly focusing on one or two we put random and minimal effort into all of them, which then creates a lack of results.
So, instead of trying to improve yourself in every area of your life try this:
- Create your laundry list of desired changes.
- Put them into a list based on PRIORITIES
- Choose the top one on the list to focus on first (once you accomplish those you can move on to other desired changes)
- Then take the steps below with that goal to flush out the details and plans
Here’s how to REACH THAT FIRST GOAL:
1) PLAN: what will you need to reach your goal? What steps will you have to take?
2) PREP: put those action steps into your calendar & ensure you have all the things you need in order.
3) EXECUTE: DO those steps each and every day, even if it’s a small thing, make sore you do them and stay consistent (not perfect, but consistent)
4) ACCOUNTABILITY: who will you have to keep you accountable? Without accountability it can be much harder to follow through
5) PATIENCE: your goal will likely take time. Keep pushing through even when you don’t see the results you want. If you are following your plan you will succeed…be patient.
6) PERSEVERANCE: Don’t give up! You are stronger than you think and you can make small changes to reach your goal. Keep going!
When we have a goal we need to flush out the details, create action steps, and understand what resources we will need to succeed.
“A goal without a plan is just a wish”
We can’t just say out loud, “I want to get healthier.” That has no plan, no action steps to take, and doesn’t set yourself up for success.
Instead we need to set SMART Goals, create small action steps, figure out what resources you need to be successful, find accountability, and put those action steps into our calendar.
SMART Goals = Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound
